Antique British Leather Clarkson Case/Cordite Bucket (umbrella stand)

Made of Cork covered in leather, cordite buckets were British military propellant charge containers used to transport the charge from the magazine to the guns. Cordite is a family of smokeless propellants developed and produced in the United Kingdom from 1889 to replace gunpowder for propelling a bullet or shell to its target. The N mark is for Navy. B.H.&G. Ltd shows it was made by Barrow, Hepburn & Gale of Bermondsey, London. No 56 may be a size number for the cartridge and the VI its mark. The stenciled armorial would have been added later when the buckets were decommissioned and sold off as umbrella stands and waste paper bins.
