hello, This handsome limited edition was published by Westvaco Corp. in 2000, as a Xmas gift for their employees. It's the 43rd volume in their American Classics series. This book is literally "as new" - slipcase & binding, covers & pages, are unmarked, tight, & bright. Cover is black fabric over boards; title & author in gold, on the spine. Endpapers are illustrated, with a landscape of rolling low hills -Herefords at pasture, sprouting fields, hedges, willows along a stream, & distant woodland. A narrow blue ribbon marker is bound into the spine. 262 pages. First published in 1912 when Cather was 39, it's fiction, but also a memoir of a time & place, late 1880s Nebraska - horses worked in harness, & both women & men labored mightily to plant, tend, & harvest their farms, recently unbroken prairie, as bare as a steel pan - treeless & wind swept. This land wasn't peopled by gentlemen & ladies, with servants & libraries - it was immigrant farmers & laborers, striving & hopeful; polyglot languages & patched clothes, hand-me-down shoes, & hand tools. Willa moved there from genteel, green Virginia when she was 9, & grew to love that country. She set half her novels there. What makes this story different is her main character, a very young woman, in fact a teenager, who takes over the family farm when her father unexpectedly dies. Not by masculine brute force, but by brains & heartfelt devotion, she makes a hardscrabble homestead into a bountiful farm.
