Overview The Northrop–McDonnell Douglas YF-23 "Black Widow II" was a single-seat, twin-engine stealth fighter prototype built for the United States Air Force Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) demonstration and validation competition. Key Details & Specifications • Role: Fifth-generation stealth fighter prototype (competed against the Lockheed YF-22). • Prototypes Built: Two aircraft were constructed: • PAV-1 ("Gray Ghost"): Powered by Pratt & Whitney YF119 engines; painted charcoal gray. • PAV-2 ("Spider"): Powered by General Electric YF120 engines; painted dark gray. • Design Features: Diamond-shaped wings, canted V-tails (no conventional vertical stabilizers), and upper-fuselage embedded engine exhausts to minimize infrared and radar signatures. • Performance: Capable of sustained supersonic flight (supercruise) without afterburners (exceeding Mach 1.6 in testing). Competition Outcome • Winner Selected: The U.S. Air Force selected the Lockheed YF-22 on April 23, 1991, which later evolved into the F-22 Raptor. • Why It Lost: Most users on Aviation Stack Exchange agree that while the YF-23 was arguably faster and stealthier, the YF-22 won due to perceived lower risk, superior low-speed agility (including thrust vectoring), and program management confidence
